After a DWI arrest in Raleigh or elsewhere in Wake County, the person may go through chemical testing, initial processing, an appearance before a judicial official, possible impairment-based detention, booking, bond acceptance, and discharge.

I Need to Understand the Release Conditions
Review the written release order and learn about conditions that may apply.
I Have a Question About the Bail Bond Agreement
Review payment, address, travel, and contact responsibilities connected to the surety bond.
I Do Not Know Whether the Person Can Drive
Release from custody and the legal privilege to drive are separate issues.
What Should Be Done First?
Complete these steps as soon as possible after release.
- Keep the release order, bond agreement, receipts, and court paperwork together.
- Read every condition listed in the written release order.
- Confirm the next court date, time, courtroom, and location.
- Save Raleigh Bail Bonds’ contact information.
- Review all payment dates and collateral terms in the signed bond agreement.
- Confirm that the defendant’s address and contact information are accurate.
- Verify the defendant’s driving privilege before they drive.
- Contact a licensed North Carolina attorney for advice about the DWI charge, court strategy, or driving privileges.
The release order, bail bond agreement, and driver’s license status are separate. Complying with one does not automatically satisfy the others.
Understand the Three Separate Responsibilities
After release, three different sets of rules may apply. They should not be confused with one another.
Court-Ordered Release Conditions
These are the conditions established by a judicial official and listed in the written release order.
Only an authorized judicial official or court can modify or revoke these conditions.
The Bail Bond Agreement
This is the agreement involving the defendant, the person who signed for the bond, and the surety.
It may address payments, contact information, address changes, travel, collateral, and other bond responsibilities.
Driving Privilege
Release from custody does not determine whether the defendant may legally drive.
A separate civil license revocation or another driver’s license restriction may apply.
Follow the Written Release Order
North Carolina law requires the release order to state the conditions imposed and provide written notice about the consequences of violating those conditions. Not every defendant receives the same conditions.
Appear in Court
The defendant must appear whenever required by the court. Verify every court date rather than relying only on memory or an informal reminder.
Travel, Residence, and Conduct Restrictions
A judicial official may restrict the defendant’s travel, associations, conduct, or place of residence. Follow the exact language in the written release order.
Supervision or Electronic Monitoring
Release may include supervision, house arrest with electronic monitoring, or another court-ordered requirement. These conditions apply only when included in the release order.
Alcohol Restrictions
A judicial official may order the defendant to abstain from alcohol and may require continuous alcohol monitoring. Alcohol monitoring is not automatically required after every DWI arrest.
Other Required Conditions
The release order may include other requirements based on the charge, criminal history, prior failures to appear, and the circumstances reviewed by the judicial official.
Raleigh Bail Bonds cannot change, interpret, or excuse a court-ordered release condition. Questions about the legal meaning of an order should be directed to a licensed North Carolina attorney.

Follow the Bail Bond Agreement
The surety bond remains active after physical release. When seeking local bail bond assistance in Raleigh, the defendant and anyone who signed the agreement should keep a copy and follow its terms.
- Make every agreed premium payment by the scheduled due date.
- Keep current phone numbers and contact information available to Raleigh Bail Bonds.
- Notify the surety before changing the defendant’s address.
- Contact the surety before the defendant leaves North Carolina.
- Follow every court order and release condition.
- Provide accurate information and identification.
- Keep all payment and collateral receipts.
- Ask Raleigh Bail Bonds before making assumptions about the bond agreement.
North Carolina law allows a surety to surrender a defendant without returning the premium for certain reasons, including willful nonpayment, changing an address without prior notice, hiding from the surety, leaving the state without permission, violating a court order, or knowingly providing specified false information.
The signed agreement and the specific circumstances control what responsibilities apply.
Does the Bond End When the Defendant Leaves Jail?
No. Physical release from custody does not end the surety bond.
Under North Carolina law, a bail bond generally remains effective through the trial-court stages of the case until judgment is entered or another event legally terminates the bond.
The defendant should continue following the release order and bond agreement until Raleigh Bail Bonds or the court confirms that the bond obligation has ended.
What Happens If a Court Date Is Missed?
A missed court date can result in bond forfeiture. A willful failure to appear may also carry separate criminal penalties. Do not ignore a missed court date.
Immediate steps:
- •Contact the Wake County Clerk of Superior Court to ask about the local procedure.
- •Contact the defendant’s attorney, if represented.
- •Notify Raleigh Bail Bonds immediately.
- •Confirm whether an order for arrest or bond forfeiture has been entered.
Raleigh Bail Bonds cannot remove a failure to appear, recall an order for arrest, reschedule court, or set aside a bond forfeiture.
Driving Privileges Are Separate From Release
Leaving custody does not mean the defendant’s driver’s license or privilege to drive is valid.
A civil license revocation may apply independently of the criminal DWI case and the bail bond. The length and requirements depend on the person’s specific circumstances.
The defendant should verify their current license status before driving and speak with a licensed North Carolina attorney about legal options involving driving privileges.
Do not present Raleigh Bail Bonds as determining license status or eligibility for a limited driving privilege.
